Since everybody has been so helpful in the past...
I have a 172 H with a single comm. I am thinking of adding a Narco 122 to get started on my instrument rating. This appears to be the least expensive way to achieve my goal. My 172 is great but I probally will move up in a year or so and don't want to sink a lot of $$$ into instruments. Does anybody have any experience with the Narco 122? The model I am looking at has the marker built in.
I have a Narco NAV 122 and think it's the cat's meow. It's got VOR/LOC/GS/MB receivers and indicators all in a 3.125" diameter instrument cutout. Mine has been trouble free, but getting them serviced when they do go south can be problematic. There are a few avionics shops around that can still get parts from Narco, but several years ago Narco changed its marketing strategy and dropped many of the shops that had been servicing their equipment.
If you're thinking about buying a used one, make sure EVERYTHING works before parting with your money.
if you need repair with narco ,the best i found is to send them directlty the equipment .
they will repair it and bring it up to date better than any shop.
in addition they have an exchange or upgrade program . they sell also used radios.
I have a Narco 122 for sale. Recent yellow tag. It works great, and never had a problem with it. It was removed for an avionics upgrade. Asking price is $1,600, complete with connectors. No mounting tray is necessary as it bolts directly to the panel. The radio was very accurate, and easy to use. I also have a few other used radios available, it you are interested. Phone number is (650)524-7208 PST
I used the TKM MX-12 in my upgrade and I'm pretty happy. Direct replacement for Mark 12 that was there, and I added the MC-60 Digital CDI (I'm a computer guy and I like digital stuff)
TKM radios are easy to use, flip/flop, and easy to read. Service is direct from the factory.
Our flight school has many Nav 121 units installed in our aircraft. Unfortunately Narco has limited repair capability on these older units. They are virtually bullet proof, but with lack of available parts will soon be obsolete. However Narco still services the Nav 122 units. We priced some Nav 122 units from Narco for about $2700. Bruce your price sounds fair for a serviceable unit.
No, the TKM radios do not have a built-in glideslope receiver, but they sell the MG-200. They also have the MC-60 Nav/Com Digital indicator. I do not believe TKM has a web site, but you can check out their stuff at:
