Can anyone tell me where I can get FAA approved stuctural repair procedures for a 172 or prior approved 337 to base a field appoval on?? I need to repair a right wing tip back to wing station 172. There is very minor front spar and lower stringer damage but the lower shin sta 172 to tip is a mess. Thanks for any help!!
The 100 series MX manual has the guidelines, and the use of AC43.13 will provide the necessary procedures for this repair. It should not require a field approval providing original Cessna parts are used for the repair. There is a company out of Ohio, Essco, that you can get a 172 manual. Most pilot shops should have a copy of AC 43.13
You are correct... These documents are considered "Acceptable" Data. The maintenance manual used in conjunction with AC43.13 and the use of factory parts, no field approval is needed. This would be considered a MAJOR repair and any IA can sign it off and return it to service. I have done this a number of times and it is quite legal as long as the FAA Form 337 is submitted and the logs are filled out by an appropriately rated mechanic.
Additionally, Field approvals are generally required when you "Modify" an airplane or add something to it that would modify the airplane's basic design. The repair on the other hand is restoring the airplane to it's original type design which can be approved for return to service by an IA. Hope this info helps...

Also, concerning the use of AC43.13-1B, a little known fact is that it may me used as not only acceptable data, but also as approved data.
The first page paragraph 1 says in part;
The repair data may also be used as approved data, and the AC chapter, page, and paragraph listed in block 8 of FAA Form 337 when:
a. the user has determined that it is appropriate to the product being repaired;
b. it is directly applicable to the repair being made; and
c. it is not contrary to manufacturers data.
Thanks Tom it does, I am an IA but my FSDO airworthness inspector did not agree since the spars and stringer were being repaired and MR'd from there original drawing state (Not returned to print). Since the repair to the spar and stringer affects the design strength any repair to them was unapproved, in his opinion. I will approach this again with the FSDO, thanks for your help...
Thanks Del Lehmann, that is how I read the "Purpose" also. I will continue to pursure yours and Tom's advice. My FLT SIDS. Inspector is on the field quite often so he roams freely and has his nose in everything!! Thanks
Hi I am based in Shetland, UK. I am looking at restoring a 172M which flipped upside down a number of years ago and has been stored since.I would ideally like a restoration manual or workshop type manual so that i can avoid some of the silly and expensive mistakes that would be made if i just forged ahead. I have some parts from another donor aircraft including firewall forward engine mounting, exhaust etc for the Lycoming 0-320-E2D engine. The major item to be replaced is the Fin which was badly damaged when the aircraft tried taxying upside down. Any help you guys can give would be greatly appreciated
