I was looking at the TN Wings website and noticed they had some really nice wood inserts for Cessna control yokes. That got me to wondering about the legalities of installing a nice thin wood instrument panel overlay to replace the old plastic ones in my C150G.
I have a friend who is a master wood worker and it would be easy to have him fabricate an exact replica of what is on my plane out of some exotic wood but as I said, I'm not sure if that would fall within the realm of legal owner made parts.
One of our members had a solid wood panel cover made for his 1946 C-140. It is so thick, that he had to put extensions on the altimeter and DG knobs. I will give him a call tomorrow and ask what was involved from a legal standpoint. I will also find the photos and post them.
Mat,
Thanks. I have been away for a while and am on my way to a cruise in the Western Caribbean tomorrow but I would love to see the photos. We have a world class cabinet maker here in town who says he can do anything I want so long as I provide a pattern.
Mat,
Did you ever get those photos of the wood panel? I am looking at mine and as soon as I gat Avionics Unlimited to reinstall my Narco122D, I want to upgrade the panel covers. My little plane is coming along well and I intend to do a complete major overhaul on the engine in July...thank God for my A&P ticket so I can do it myself....but in the meantime I want to spiff up the cosmetics on the plane.
Tnanks,
Reece
