I have own a 1957 Cessna 172 and want to replace the lower instrument panel (where the cable controls thread thru). As simple as it sounds, I find no convienent method for the replacement of this panel due to the knobs being threaded through the panel. A brief inspection of the knobs shows no set screw fastening onto the cable. The 1957 maintenance manuals are not very helpful on this subject.
Is the only method of removal by removing each cable from the specific attaching point and pulling the cable through or am I over looking the obvious? Thank you for any advice you can provide.
The cables need disconnected at the business end, pulled through the firewall and out the lower panel. There are jamb nuts behind the panel that secure the cables. It's a PITA
Thank you for the reply Larry. I had suspected that was the direction I was headed, but was hoping "beyond hope" that I wouldn't have to go through that.... thanks again!
If you are looking to replace the plastic overlay for cosmetic reasons, there is a guy who makes the overlay with splits which allows it to be placed over the existing panel. I had his website but can't find it. You could probably search Cessna interior plastic or cessna instrument panels and locate him.
