C172 Interior Post Light, required item?

I hate the way the stock Interior post light looks on my C172G and have come up with two possible solutions.

First, I could just remove it all together. Is this legal, or is it a required item?

Second, I could replace it with a more modern LED light, say this one from Aicraft Spruce.

Any helpfull tips?
