I have a 1975 172m with a ram 160 conversion. I am having problems with oil temp red lining during climbs at 200 feet per minute. I have verified the gauge and bled the oil cooler. The 3 inch scat line is new and also the cooler and lines. Does anyone have a solution or know of an stc that might help.
High oil temp can be caused by a number of problems. I had the same issue with my 1978 C-172N. We checked the following:
Vernatherm valve
All engine baffling
Magneto timing
Oil cooler and lines
Temperature sending unit and wiring
Temperature gauge
Scat tube that routes cooling air thru oil cooler
Switch to Aeroshell multi-viscosity oil (20W-50)
And finally, the one that fixed the problem:
Installed the Cessna service kit to add a cooling lip
to the bottom of the cowling.
This all assumes that your engine is in good condition otherwise, as internal problems can also cause overheating, such as excessive blowby past the rings, bearing wear, etc.
I have a 1974 172m and also upgraded to a ram 160hp and have 235+ oil temps. I'm looking for a field approval to upgrade to a bigger oil cooler. If anyone here knows of anyone else that has done this it would be a BIG HELP. If I can get it I'll post.
We put a bigger jet in the carb, checked timing, baffles etc. The cowling lip is not approved for this model, though it may help. I've heard there is a field approval for running tandem 8406 oil coolers. I sent mine out to have rebuilt. If iI can't get field approval for the larger 10599 oil cooler I may put 2 8406's in.
