A guided trip to Mexico is an excellent way to experience Mexico while letting someone else take care of the paperwork and trip logistics. Mexico offers many different destination experiences for pilots like Baja California, Cancun and Acapulco. However, there are many other exciting destinations that are less well travelled available for pilots and I will share a few of them with you.
Southeast Mexico, for example, is a unique destination in that it served as the launching point for Hernan Cortez’s conquest of Mexico and was also the center of the Mayan civilization. There are numerous beautiful colonial cities like Veracruz, Merida and Campeche built around the traditional Zocalo (city center) where you can see the rich, cultural heritage of colonial Mexico. Campeche, for example, was an important trading port which was walled to protect it from marauding pirates and much of the wall, bastions and forts remain to this day. For those interested in archeology, you can visit well known sites like Chichen Itza, Edzna, Palenque and Uxmal which offer a fascinating view into the Mayan world. For the more adventurous traveler, there are other spectacular sites deeper in the Yucatan jungle. When the archeologists began exploring the archeological sites deep in the Yucatan Peninsula, the only practical way to get people and supplies in and out was to cut an airstrip out of the jungle. Some of these airstrips still remain and have been paved (3,000 feet plus) by the government to reach remote villages. From these remote jungle airstrips, we can reach destinations like Calakmul (which is now believed to be the largest Mayan city) Chicana, Becan, Xpujil and many other important Mayan sites where there is virtually no tourism. Water sports enthusiasts can enjoy snorkeling, fishing and scuba diving at popular resorts like Cozumel or Isla Mujeres or they can experience more rustic and remote locations like Holbox Island or Xcalac. We don’t travel to Mexico a few times a year, we live here and do this every day and we enjoy seeing other fellow pilots experience what Mexico has to offer.
