I have a 1978 182R. I just installed a concord 24v battery. The next that I saw was the flicker of the amp needle on the panel. I cleaned the battery terminals, turned the master off and on a couple of times to no avail. It seems to still charge but with the flicker.
Any one know why......Paul

I used the 172Q climb and Cruise charts for Flight Planning and it was within 0.3 US Gallons.

For the engine burn-in at full power I had 14 GPH at low altitudes with no leaning. The engine fuel flow chart at % rated power that came with the STC should be in the aircraft documents and it seems to give you a good cross reference to the theoretical fuel flows. The weight, temperature, leaning and density altitude will all affect the actual fuel flow.

There was an NTSB Letter on fuel consumption dated April 11, 1994 that you should also read. The Massachusetts Air Reserve also have some data on several 172P aircraft that were converted from 160HP to 180HP. The only discrepancy on the latter info is the Climb Speed. The 172Q with the 180HP engine has a climb speed of 73 KIAS but they seem to have kept the 172P climb speed of 76 KIAS. It may be due to the Fuel Weight. If anyone has the rationale for this difference, I would be interested in hearing it.

Most of the "stand alone" circuits are only protected enough to cover the accessory being powered. Most kits come with all of the necessary info or parts to complete the installation. A good alternative if you have to drill a hole in the panel is to install a c/b switch rated at whatever the system requires. The best system I have found, being user friendly, dependable and install friendly is Whelen. This system is a little pricey, the only other one I would consider is Aeroflash. Both of these come with all of the necessary STC paperwork...

Fuel Cap Covers

STAY-SEALED, Inc., a Lakeland, Florida based company has been researching and documenting an age-old problem of water/fuel contamination in general aviation aircraft. This research went back to the 1960's when the FAA and the NTSB started collecting data on all aircraft accidents. Aging aircraft, corroded fuel tank filler ports, deteriorated fuel cap seals and the cost of replacing aircraft parts are all major factors of this deadly problem. STAY-SEALED decided to take on this problem by designing and developing a sealed fuel cap cover. This lightweight, easy to install cover fits over and attaches to the existing cap. When installed, it creates a watertight seal around the filler port. Since the cover is to be installed at the same time as the pitot tube cover and the other factory safety devices, there is no need for expensive STC's or other approvals. The patented sealing and locking features have been in development for two years. The testing took this device through hurricane winds and rain. The cover has been temperature tested in freezing rain and snow. The Solar Light Lab has been testing the product under the ASTM G155 accelerated UV light and weather standards. STAY-SEALED says that NO deterioration of the seal or cover was noted after five years of UV light and weather. The aircraft insurance industry has reviewed this product and confirms the need for such a device based on the FAA data that was compiled. Several models have been developed which will fit most of the single engine aircraft fleet. The STAY-SEALED cap is now available in Cessna and Piper models.

I have a small old garden tractor lawn mower that I use. I made the tow bar and there is a ball on the front of the tractor. It works well except it is hard to get on to at first. After a couple of times it is OK. The ball must be on the front so you can watch where you are pushing the plane. A 4 wheeler would work except the hitch should be on the front.

The area in front of my hangar is constantly getting potholes and gravel washed on it lately. Also there is a sligth incline to overcome to push the plane back in the hangar. This makes it backbreaking work to push and pull my 172 from my hangar to the taxiway if I am flying alone. I have seen the "power-tow" devices, but I am hesitant to pay $1000 for one of these. Has anyone ever rigged up a device to tow an airplane with a 4-wheeler? I assume this can be done, but I have never seen it. I assume I could get a trailer hitch attachment welded to a towbar and hook it up to an ATV. Anyone seen this done or see any reason why this wouldn't work?
Input greatly appreciated.
