In addition to the differences already mentioned, the simulated panel refreshes 5 times per second in the 496 versus once per second in the 396. That makes the simulated panel much more useful in the event of a partial instrument failure. Another feature is the SafeTaxi in which taxi diagrams for most larger US airports are included in the database. The automobile maps are also included in the 496 whereas they're an option for the 396.

Both have the ability to display XM weather in addition to TIS traffic and are compatible with the Zaon XRX.

New for Garmin is the 495 which is identical to the 496 with the exception of having no XM and no automotive maps. It's actually selling for less than the 396 at just $1595.

I have a c-182 experiencing audio and com issues the hardware includes a King KMA 24, Dual King KX 155B's and Intervox 4-Place Intercom w/Music Input. The problem seems to be with incoming transmissions (ATIS,ATC) i cannot here them in my headset but communicating with co-pilot or passengers is not an issue. Transmitting is no problem but the only way i can receive outside transmissions is by turning on the cabin speakers by the way this is happening with both radios. It was suggested that my head set might have been switched from stereo to mono so i used three different headsets in all 4 places with the same result. Any insight on this would be greatly appreciated. One more thing i don't believe it is related but my Century HSI was also inop this morning along with the com issue.

From my visits to avionics shops all around the country, I have been told many times that after their first install of the GMA347, many shops just won't install another one.

Why?

It is exactly the PC programming that limits the flexibility of the audio panel.

For example. The PMA8000B has a front panel push button labeled Mute. This is the button that will turn on and off the muting circuit. (better known as the Karaoke mode).

With the GMA347, you have to program the unit while it is attached to the PC to mute during radio reception or not to mute during radio reception. Once set, it will always perform the same way. Think of it, never being able to turn ON the mute for the aircraft radio until you reconnect it to a PC, and then only an Avionics shop can perform such a change.

We support cellular telephones, there is a list at www.ps-engineering.com/pma8000b.shtml click on Cellular Telephone to see a list of phones that work.

Our IntelliVox works flawlessly. Since 1997, we have shipped over 66,000 systems and everyone just loves our automatic VOX.

Plus, the GMA347 uses 2 77 pin connectors. Filling up the first 77 pin connector first and then using many fewer pins on the second connector. This is awfully tight.

There is a list of comparisons at www.ps-engineering.com/compare.shtml you might want to look at that before making your final decision.

Our 172H has two Narco 12Ds, both of which started getting intermittent TX problems. Our local shop sent one back to Narco and it came back fixed with an $1130 bill. No joke! But it's fixed.
I yanked the second one out myself and sent it to Bevan-Rabelle in Kansas and it came back costing less than $200 to fix. They found a number of bad solder joints, a broken trace on the tx board which they fixed, cleaned it and realigned it, bench tested it hot and cold and sent it back. I'm not sure if it's really fixed, but I'm also starting to suspect a bad wiring harness is really the culprit this time. I was very happy with the service and turnaround time so would certainly recommend giving them a call. Look them up on Google.

Dav,

The KT 76 is about 30 years old. The 76A is still in production. Unfortunately it is not a slide in replacement.

I would not suggest a Narco. The field support is zero. I have had good luck with most of the Garmin transponders. The 320A is reasonably priced, and does not have the cavity tube issues the KT76A units do.

Assuming nothing has been changed with the antenna system since the original installation, I would suggest replacing the antenna and coax. A degraded antenna system can shorten the life of the transmitter conciderably. With a transponder that has a cavity tube, it will pull it off frequency and change the pulse width of the signal.

Before you do anything, have your 76 bench tested. I wouldn't spend a lot of time trying to fix it, but it may be something that could be repaired.

Happy wiring,

Hi Ken,

I've run into this same problem on a few of my customers aircraft. You won't believe this but the unit is difficult to get into the rack tight. I had to use a pair of pliers to offer better leverage to the allen wrench. Have a friend push on the face of the unit at the same time to take some of the strain off of the mount screw. Careful not to break it.

HI DAV,
I just replaced a KT 76A the other day. The cavity was bad, $950.00 for repair only. I bought an exchange unit for $700.00. King is old but good radios I expect there won't be anymore problems for some time.
