The MT IS light....I've pulled the prop through on a friends plane....and really felt the difference. Light is good on the nose of a 185....mine, at least, tends to be nose heavy as it is.

Regarding LOP, if you haven't discovered John Deakins Pelicans Perch articles, he seems to be the most knowledgable of anybody...great articles on engine management plus other fascinating stuff like flying a Hurricane, flying for Air America.......

Cheers, enjoy the 550!

So far I really like the MT. It is smooth and quiet and spins up instantly. Another thing is it is very light which is important to me. I was a little concerned about durability but I only run my 185 on bush wheels a couple months a year in between skis and floats. As far as running lean of peak the answer is not yet because I only have the factory cht, I will be installing an engine mgt system soon... probably an 830.

Big leap for you from a 470 to a 550....I went from a 520 to the 550 and am super impressed. What do you think of the MT? I have the 80" Hartzell wide chord and really like it. Others swear by their big Macs....

Seems you have already started .

AD Status records & 337 File are significant here.

Finding records of oil & tire changes appear remote & unnecessary.

The disc should give some info as to where your aircraft was based in it's early life.

Perhaps someone may recognize the N number.

Another thought is to put the N number on this forum & see what comes up.

As is; you will NEVER have "Complete Logs" but that is not really

terrible.

Records ( logs) should be kept until the operation is superceded.

Most log items have probably been redone several times since 1969.

You're not thinking of USING copies of a different aircft's logs?

172A Panel Project

Hello All,

After enjoying this summer's flying, I plan to do an instrument panel upgrade on my old 172A. In planning ahead, I thought I'd ask the brain-trust what kind of things I should be aware of. Currently, I have a mish-mash of avionics, some I'd like to keep, and some to simply toss. The right side of the panel, I'd like to keep as stock and retro as possible.

For those who have done it, with the control linkage being what it is, is there enough room in the center panel area to have the radio stack? Without tearing the panel apart, I'm thinking probably not.

So for those who've re-done their panels, I'd appreciate any advice and if you have any "after" photos to show me what can actually be done within the confines of the venerable 172A, I can send you my contact email address. I'd certainly appreciate the "before tear out" help.

Thanks!

Thanks for the explanation.
I have a Powerflow on my Cessna 172K with 150 hp and worried about exceeding the power rating of the engine because my plane acts like it is developing more horsepower. Good to hear that is not how it works.

Prior to Powerflow, I used to fly with the throttle about an inch from full throttle and 2600 rpm and 120 mph.
With Powerflow, I cruise about 2.5" from full throttle with a 3" repitched prop (more pitch) and get 125 mph at about 2500 rpm.

When I am asked by ATC for "best forward speed", I can do about 130+ mph at 2600 rpm and still have throttle travel left.

In a slight descent, such as shooting the ILS or getting down to pattern altitude, I can easily do 140 mph or top of the green with throttle backed off a little from cruise setting. Before Powerflow and the pitch change, I couldn't do that at redline rpm. This capability is wonderful as I fly with a lot of jet traffic and having the option to fly the approach at the best forward speed is great to have.

I did the 3" prop pitch change just before I got the Powerflow and it was terrible in climb, and cruise was difficult as I could not develop over 2500 rpm in cruise. So, it's not the pitch change alone that gives the performance improvement.

Climbout is what I like best with Powerflow. At full throttle, I climb out at 120 mph and get a climb rate about 400 fpm with full fuel and one person. This is with a cruise prop + 1" pitch change.

Hello,
I have a 1982 Cessna 182 that has the Lompoc Aero Specialties side plexiglass and the plastic frame around the glass has gone bad with time. Does anyone know where I can get either a replacement frame or an entirely new set of windows? Please shoot me an email.
Thanks,

Monarch sold sump cover plates which seal around the filler and use the screws in the existing ring to hold it down. I put some on my 172 some years back and they work well.
Beware of their replacement fuel caps, I and many others have had leakage problems and went back to stock caps. Monarch may be out of business as a result of the cap problems but the sump covers are great. Steve VW

Logs needed for a 182?

Hello,
I bought a 1956 C-182 and took the seller for his word that all the logs were present.
I am missing the Airframe and engine logs from 1956 through 1969.
I know I made a big mistake by not having him fax me the logs before I bought the plane. Be that as it may, I trusted him and now am payiny the price.
I need someoneslogs of a 1956 C-182A to look at, to see how and what I have to go through to reconstruct the missing logs.
I am missing 2021 hrs.My logs start when the 0470L engine had just been overhauled so I am not missing any engine work that I know of.I am not looking for any A&P/IA's numbers or names, just what work was done during the first 13 yrs. of life. I am going to start with the 337's on Disc from the FAA.
Can anyone help me out with this huge undertaking by sending me some old logs of a 1956 182 to look at???
Sincerely,
James.

I have a 1959 1/2 172A that has a nicely running mid-time 0-300A engine/prop from a prior overhaul. Type Certificate requires a C/D. Not anxious to reengine/prop the plane for the obvious reasons.

Anyone have data or field approval/337 info that I can use?

Good thread. I'm looking for an STC to make "legal" the installation of an 0-300A on a 1959 1/2 172A. My plane is authorized on the type cert for an 0-300C/D which was removed in the last overhaul. I'm stuck in annual and facing an "unairworthy" verdict unless someone can help.

Anybody able to help with this?
