Since no one's replied, I'll take a crack at it. If price is a consideration, you won't beat an airline price. Personally, I hate flying via airlines and much prefer the convenience and security of a private charter flight. I suspect you will find that to be quite expensive.

Unfortunately, the FAA has taken a very narrow look at private and commercial pilots who fly people to destinations they want to go to and consider those flights for hire to be illegal air carrier operations. They have taken very strict enforcement actions against pilots who offer those types of flights. If you find one willing to fly the trip for you, the pilot will be doing so at great risk to his license if he does not have a part 135 charter certificate. Also, at the current price of fuel, you'll probably find the flight to be surprisingly expensive.

Call your local charter company and check their prices. If it's too expensive, airlines will be your only legal way to go.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news.

Hello,

I'm looking for some advice and direction. I need find a flight from St. Petersburg, Fl to New Bern, NC for my mother and myself. She is in a wheelchair. It takes several separate flights with layovers on commercial airlines to get from point A to B. So, I'm thinking a private flight might be a better solution for my mother.

Where does one start looking for a pilot and a plane? I know there are charter companies out there. But, the planes look a little big (and expensive) for our needs.

Is there a way to find an experienced pilot, without the charter company? How do I know that I'm working with someone reputable, and safe?

Thank you in advance.

Flying from San Diego to San Francisco in a Cessna 172

A year after i picked up my PPL, my first long trip was from San Diego to San Francisco in a C172. We flew over the pacific ocean ,passing Calatina Island, abeam Los Angeles International, and followed the coast all the way up.

I grew up in California my entire life, and have lived up and down this state. Seeing the state from above makes it seem so small.. San Diego is just "over the hill" from Los Angeles, and Palm Springs is a hop skip and a jump over that "hill".

If you are in California, i suggest these airports to visit.

Oceano - central california, coastal. This is one of those hidden gems airports. Temp Camp right next to your plane, and the ocean is a few blocks west. The city bus stop is next to the airport and can take you all over. If you are into off-roading, there are plenty of places to rent 4 wheelers and ride in the Dunes.

Sedona, Arizona. Absolutely beautiful place to visit. The airport is on a mesa, with tons of touristy things to do.

i posted a bunch of pictures here.

Changes to procedures for Mexican Multiple Entry permit

At the request of Caribbean Sky Tours, Mexico’s DGAC (FAA equivalent) has agreed to make some modifications to the entry permit process to speed up the issuance of Multiple Entry Permits as well as resolving some unforeseen problems inherent with Multiple Entry permits at the end of the calendar year. After multiple meetings with the DGAC in Mexico City, the Director General and the legal department of the DGAC agreed that our proposals were sound and consistent with Mexican Civil Aviation law and they have given the green light to go forward with the implementation.

We will be at booth A80 at Sun-N-Fun again this year and will be making several presentations during the week both at the Sun-N-Fun tents as well as the FAA Production Studios. We will be covering these changes to the Multiple Entry process along with a review of procedures, Mexican VFR charts, new destinations and services as well. Please come by and visit with us as we will have lots of information on this along with information on our Pilot Guide, escorted Fly-In’s and Vacation Planning services. Also, if anyone has any questns as to possible destinations or activities for a trip to Mexico, we will be happy to discuss them with you.

For those not able to attend, I will be making a detailed post when we return, it has been crazy here as we just returned from a two week trip through central Mexico (Puebla, Cuernavaca, Oaxaca, Taxco, Huatulco, Puerto Escondido, Queretaro and back to Cancun)and we are getting ready for the flight over to Florida to haul all of stuff.

A guided trip to Mexico is an excellent way to experience Mexico while letting someone else take care of the paperwork and trip logistics. Mexico offers many different destination experiences for pilots like Baja California, Cancun and Acapulco. However, there are many other exciting destinations that are less well travelled available for pilots and I will share a few of them with you.

Southeast Mexico, for example, is a unique destination in that it served as the launching point for Hernan Cortez’s conquest of Mexico and was also the center of the Mayan civilization. There are numerous beautiful colonial cities like Veracruz, Merida and Campeche built around the traditional Zocalo (city center) where you can see the rich, cultural heritage of colonial Mexico. Campeche, for example, was an important trading port which was walled to protect it from marauding pirates and much of the wall, bastions and forts remain to this day. For those interested in archeology, you can visit well known sites like Chichen Itza, Edzna, Palenque and Uxmal which offer a fascinating view into the Mayan world. For the more adventurous traveler, there are other spectacular sites deeper in the Yucatan jungle. When the archeologists began exploring the archeological sites deep in the Yucatan Peninsula, the only practical way to get people and supplies in and out was to cut an airstrip out of the jungle. Some of these airstrips still remain and have been paved (3,000 feet plus) by the government to reach remote villages. From these remote jungle airstrips, we can reach destinations like Calakmul (which is now believed to be the largest Mayan city) Chicana, Becan, Xpujil and many other important Mayan sites where there is virtually no tourism. Water sports enthusiasts can enjoy snorkeling, fishing and scuba diving at popular resorts like Cozumel or Isla Mujeres or they can experience more rustic and remote locations like Holbox Island or Xcalac. If you want to pamper yourself, we can show you many boutique hotels located on remote strips of beach or deep in the jungle.

We don’t travel to Mexico a few times a year, we live here and do this every day and we enjoy seeing other fellow pilots experience what Mexico has to offer.

Hi Reece. The downside to Grand Bahama (Freeport) and New Providence (Nassau) is that they are extremely "touristy". When I go home, I visit my family on Nassau for a few days and then I am off to the out islands which is where the "real" Bahamas is. The plus side of the main islands is that they have plenty of services.

Although they are all one country, each island has its own unique flavor and there is always something neat to see. We are in the process of developing an escorted trip for August and would love to have you join us. On one of these trips we would be with you the whole time so it would be a great way to watch how its done so that the next time you can do it on your own.

Hello everyone, I wanted to share an experience my wife and I had with our little C150 a few weeks ago and the letter I sent to the Evergreen Aviation FBO there in Galveston.

Hello,
My name is Reece Daniel from Jacksonville, Texas. A few weeks back I surprised my wife with a lunch trip to Galveston in our Cessna 150. The flight was perfect and the weather could not be better. This was my wife’s first real experience with a General Aviation FBO and she is still talking about it to everyone that will listen.

We were not big customers. We bought fuel and a quart of oil for the plane and then had someone recommend a good seafood place. We were taken there and then picked up later by a courtesy driver from Evergreen as if we were Lear Jet customers who had bought thousands in fuel. My wife could not believe the service we received at your FBO. I was happy she had a good time and that she was made to feel so special, even though our plane “Mosquito One” could not have made you much in the way of profits.

Evergreen Aviation is the type of folks that will keep general aviation and the $200 lunch in Galveston alive. Thank you so much for helping me show my wife the true spirit of general aviation. I hope you don’t mind that I intend to share this with the folks at the Cessna Owners Association.

I look forward to our next Galveston trip. Thanks again.

The reason my wife and I are considering this is because of a very enjoyable vacation there several years back. It would be nice to make the trip in our 150 just to say we were "International" flyers :-)

Thanks for the tips though. We will probably just fly to one island and stay there. We are doing as much advance planning as we can and are very hopeful that we can make the trip later this year.

Again, to all of you....thanks! This is a great site for acc urate information.

I am most familiar with south Florida. If you want to go to Disney, the Kissimmee Gateway airport is a great option and Attractions Jet Center is who we have used as an FBO. They have Enterprise car rental but there is Hertz inside the Signature FBO which is a stone's throw away.

Further south, Marathon is a great option and Cristal Clear is the FBO we use there; great fuel prices and service. In the Miami area the two airports we use are Opa Locka KOPF and Tamiami KTMB. You may want to determine where you want to stay first as these airports are on the north and south sides of Miami. If you go to Opa Locka, Miami Flightline is who we use. At Tamiami you can use Falcon Trust or call Peninsula Avionics, they have tie downs and fuel, they're not an FBO but can give you cometitive prices and if you need any work done... I am asure that other members will have more information on other south Florida options. Now if you don;t mind going just a little further south, you can visit us here in Cancun....

Have a safe trip!

I am from Nassau and am admitedly a little biased, but.... The Bahamas is a great to fly to in ANY airplane!

I would strongly recommend that you obtain life jackets and a life raft for your trip. You can rent these from a number of places, if you need any help give us a call. Another thing to keep in mind is fuel as it is not available on every island.

Have a safe trip!!!

I picked up a brochure at Oshkosh from Bahamian Tourism geared for pilots. It is called a Bahamas Private Pilot Guide. It has a lot of information. Their website is www.myoutislands.com. The website has some pilot info but not as good as the brochure. Their phone # is 1-800-outislands.

I had relatives that lived in the Bahamas and used a 150 to travel about for many years. Also know several people that fly down each year. They say it is no problem. Have fun.

AOPA PARTNERS WITH THE FLORIDA AIR MUSEUM TO BRING SMITHSONIAN TRAVELING EXHIBIT TO LAKELAND

SUN `N FUN CAMPUS, LAKELAND, FL – The Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association (AOPA) has partnered with the Florida Air Museum at Sun ’n Fun to bring the Smithsonian traveling exhibit, “At the Controls: The Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum Looks at Cockpits” to Lakeland. The exhibit offers visitors a unique perspective of cockpits from some of the world’s most impressive air and spacecraft. “At the Controls” will open at the Florida Air Museum at Sun ’n Fun on September 29 and will remain on view through November 25.

Special educational activities for educators are planned throughout the exhibit, with a special educator’s night scheduled for Thursday, October 4 from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. AOPA will provide information and materials from its “PATH to Aviation, Pilot and Teacher Handbook” series that helps connect aviation to every day classroom topics like math, science, language and history, as well as introduce students to career options in the cockpit and throughout the aviation industry (more info at www.aopa.org/path). Educators who attend will also have the opportunity to “fly” using the Florida Air Museum’s Microsoft Flight Simulators, register for a special “At the Controls” teacher’s workshop presented by Florida Air Museum education staff, and enter to win door prizes including a ride in Sun ’n Fun’s 1941 Stearman biplane, free student museum admissions and classroom transportation grants. For more information, call 863-644-2431 or to RSVP call 863-904-4042 or email Ednite@sun-n-fun.org.

“The excitement of aviation and the endless possibilities it makes available to students are two ideas that will permeate all activities surrounding the Smithsonian exhibit’s visit with us,” explained Kathryn McManus, the Florida Air Museum’s Interim Director, “and we are proud to partner with AOPA to help visitors and students discover how they might put themselves “at the controls”.
