Hand-held Transceivers

Hi, Bob, I'm recently had a radio failure. My 337 Cessna. I realized I need a backup. I would like to purchase a hand-held transceiver and would like your recommendation as to which one has the most range and best reliability. I am not too worried about the cost. Howard Payne #88040300012

    Hi and thanks for writing. Yaesu, Icom and Sporty's all have good radios. I got the Sporty's 2 years ago and I love it. Why? It's big, with a big screen and big buttons. When your plane is bouncing around it's easy to use. And it has VHF nav and glideslope, too. And it has good accessories. I'm sold on it. (not that the other ones are bad, it's just that I'm pleased with my Sporty's.)

    I too have a Sporty's SP-400. I always carry it as a back up for the peace of mind. It seems like a nice handheld. Our aircraft also has an external antenna hook up that is dedicated to the handheld if I ever need it.
