Cessna 175 Wing Replacement - early 172 Wing?

Hello, I'm in need of a left wing for my 1959 175. They seem to be hard to come by, so I'm hoping the Cessna experts where can corroborate on rumors I heard/read that early (straight tail) 172, 180 wings are the same and could be used as a replacement.

Do you have any knowledge about that and if so any official sources I could base this work off of?

Thank you!

  • You should download the 172/175 parts manual for your year.

The manual lists the left wing as p/n 0523005-13 or -203.

    The 172 uses a different p/n, 0523005-1 or -200.

So, the 175 wings appear to be unique.

    BTW, I fly a 1961 175B, and love it.!!

  • Since the base part numbers are the same, it is very likely that the differences are minor. A detailed comparison using the parts catalogs should reveal the exact differences. Armed with that information you can ask Textron engineering, once the strike ends, if they would supply a letter of no technical objection to using the 172 wings.

Years ago, Cessna would supply a letter that stated if the wing had the same airfoil, same fuel and vent system, and was from a plane with equal or higher gross weight, it could be used as a substitute.

  • One possible problem is that the 175 wing has a 26 gallon fuel tank vs the 19 gallon tank in the 172 wing. so a 42 lb wing weight difference.

The 172XP also uses the 26 gallon tank, and is on the same type cert as the 175.

  • oops, the std 172 tank is 21 gal , with an optional long range 26 gal tank.

Is the 2350 gross for the C175 a problem with the C172 gross of 2300.?

  • Hoping to revisit this as I’m looking for a set of wings for my 175. I can find early 172/170b wings fairly easily. I know the fuel tanks are different, but what about gross weight? Do the wings determine gross weight? Whatever wings I find will likely need work, so changing structure to accommodate the larger tanks might be in the cards as well. I read about some extended tank stc’s for 172’s that increase gross weight. I’m unclear on how putting a larger tank in the wings, or additional tanks, raises gross weight.

Just trying to understand it all. Thanks

  • The difference between the 172 and 175 wing is the 175 wing has the #3 rib shortened to accommodate the extension in the 175 tank, and some wing skin removed. [ looking at the parts manual]

I don't know if the FAA would allow those changes to the 172 wing.

There is the Griggs baggage 18 gal tank, and the Flint 12 gal wing tank. No mention in the STCs about gross increase.?

  • I’m not sure where I saw a slight gross weight increase.

But early 180/182 wings might also work on a 175? Just as long as the gross is equal to or more than the standard 175 gross, and sticking with manual flaps?
