IFR GPS for Cessna 150

Is there an IFR GPS that can be installed in a Cessna 150? Where do I look for this?

    Hi lionelhector,

Virtually ANY IFR GPS can be installed in a 150 if you have the room in your panel. You have lots of choices from a good pre-owned unit to brand new. Things to consider:

    • Do you REALLY need an IFR GPS? If so be sure to get a unit that supports WAAS.
    • Be certain the database is updatable! Some older units are more expensive to update than others.
    • Whatever unit you purchase, get quotes directly from the avionics shop for installation cost AND TIMEFRAME. You don't want your aircraft grounded for months at a time.

I got my instrument rating many years ago (before GPS) in my 1974 Cessna 150. I had 1 Narco COM120/20 radio, 1 Narco Nav122 which is a VOR receiver, Marker beacon receiver, localizer, and ILS all in one long unit, but no larger than the face of the 3 1/2 inch display! I also had 1 transponder, and 1 KR86 ADF (no longer required).

You can start with a visit to your nearest Avionics shop. They will have new units and may have a selection of good used Avionics. Be prepared for sticker shock and remember the cost of the unit is the tip of the iceberg. You need to have it installed (extra cost) and if it is an IFR unit and you fly IFR, your database needs to be current and that requires a database subscription (extra recurring cost).

Give us a bit more information and I am sure other members may have some good suggestions for you.

    Regards,

    Mike

  • Thank you. I have two separate VFR GPSs in my aircraft and all I want (he said prayerfully) is a device which will allow me to descend into or through IFR conditions to land without having to declare an emergency to do it. Seriously, thanks for the response Mike.
