O-200A Overhaul recommendations AL/FL/GA
Hello friends, I am considering buying a very nice 150G to teach my children to fly in. The engine is getting close to overhaul and would like to get some recommendations from you for a shop to do the overhaul. I live in southeast Alabama, so anywhere in that area, northern Florida or southern Georgia would be great. Thank you - Brook

Hi Swartzwalker,
Have you checked with the A&P/IA who does your annual inspections? They would most certainly have a recommendation for overhaul shops in their area.
Do not discount the possibility of sending your engine out of state for service. It is done all the time. For example, I sent my engine from Illinois directly to Lycoming in Williamsport, PA to get a factory remanufactured engine. There are also some well know repair facilities in other states with varying lead times and if your area shops are booked, an out of state shop with excellent reputation may be a better bet. Penn Yan in NY and Poplar Grove in Illinois are two that come to my mind living in the midwest.
I hope other members will also have suggestions.
Regards,
Mike
Do you mean that the engine has close to 1,800 hrs on it, the typical tbo for that engine ?
TBO for part 91 operations is only the TCM recommendation, and is not mandatory.
If the engine is still airworthy; making full rated power, uses oil less than the spec. max., has good oil pressure, and per the FAA has ok compressions. although a borescope of the cylinders is more useful in indicating the state of the valves and cylinder walls, why tear it down ? Oil analysis will indicate any trends in wear metals.
These engines can run to at least 2x the tbo hours, if they still meet the spec requirements, indicating that they are still airworthy.
