Total vs useable fuel

I’m wondering if, when full, digital fuel gauges should read total or useable fuel. My 182P with 40 gallon tanks shows 40 gallons each tank when full. The useable is 37.5.

  • and then showing 'empty', '0' fuel when no more usable fuel.

  • I'm just a pilot but a bunch of people on my end would disagree that it is "total". In my case installing CIES sensors and EDM-930 display with the EDM being the only gauges I have the tank gauges show usable. JPI was quite insistent about configuring it that way (per the TCDS) when they configured the unit prior to shipping.

Since the original tank gauges indicate total fuel the STC paperwork May contradict that. If the STC says set it up for usable then you are legally okay to set it up that way. Double check your paperwork and see if there's a statement that indicates that. Carl

  • I'm curious what year your 182P is. I have a 1973 182P with long range tanks that hold 42 gallons with 39.5 useable.
